Have been here many times over the years, and have never had a bad meal or experience. The staff is always friendly, and the ambiance is the best in Vigo County for a nice meal, a German beer, and outdoor seating. I have had many of the entrees, but I would say my favorite is the Rouladen. Perfectly spiced, it really is tasty and delicious. If you are really hungry, get the Gerhardt's German Feast. You can pick any three between the Wienerschnitzel, Rouladen, Knackwurst, Bratwurst, Pfefferwurst , (other sausages), Sauerbraten, or Kassler Rippchen. Comes with 2 sides, bread, and Apfel Strudel for dessert! All that for under $20! Make sure you go with more than 4 people, so you can get Family Style! Trust me, WORTH IT! They have a decent beer list, and a full stocked bar with great wines and spirits. Go on Tuesday Nights where it is half price beer night!

I like the atmosphere, The food was reheated and bland. The staff was friendly, I believe an owner had told me the cooks had been slow all day??? How slow can it be reheating food. The table was dirty but they were busy with 3 cars in the lot!!

Very personable staff. Gerhardt himself is the host and assists with other duties as well. Dresses in traditional Lederhosen! Wife and I had never been here before. We tried the "Gerhardt's German Feast" which comes with three choices of meat and two sides, dessert and a role. All for 19.95. Good if you want to have a variety and experience the food for the first time. Otherwise, we think it was a ton of food, and we will order one of the regular menu items now that we have a better idea of what we specifically enjoy. We tried: Wienerschnitzel (it was okay), Sauerbraten (good dish to order), Knackwurst (very good with regular mustard), Pfefferwurst (blood sausage good to try but I don't know yet if I will order again), Kassler Ripchen (somewhat like ham steak decent but might not be as good as the Sauerbraten), Spaetzle (dry so make sure to say yes to the gravy), Kartoffel Salat (German potato salad was very good and recommend), Bierstube Kraut (Kraut is Kraut you like or you don't, make sure to use the mustard), and for dessert Apfel Strudel (good), Blackforest cake (not like what we have had before maybe just a different interpretation with the recipe). Tuesday is half-price BEER NIGHT! GERMAN imported beers, meaning real beer, as well as a good wine list and other delicious drinks. Overall good place for dinner for a couple or a family, cozy Germanic environment with excellent service from both the waitress as well as Gerhardt.

I was incredibly disappointed with Gerdhardts. I was really looking forward to finally coming here. We were there early so we were the only people in there to start. The service was friendly but not prompt. The atmosphere was spot on. I had the schnitzel and it just wasn't all that. I got then "lite" plate and it definitely was. Being that it was half, even the full plate wouldn't be worth the price. The potato salad was the saving grace of the meal and the third star. My wife did enjoy the salad with the house dressing. The pretzel she had was incredibly dry and was crunchy in some parts. The horseradish cheese it comes with was just plain concession stand cheese. We finished the meal with the strudel which was the final disappointment. Nobody can say that strudel is bad but I can't say I would get it again. Overall, I wouldn't come back on my own but I wouldn't complain too much if others wanted to go again. Hoping that my second trip would sway me. The place is over priced for what you get.

Yet another German restaurant that just doesn't get it. I went to Gerhard's with 2 Germans. As always, I odered a Wiener Schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. One of my companions also ordered a Wiener Schnitzel while the other wisely ordered Bauernfrustuck. The food came out far too quickly to have been freshly prepared and come to find out...it wasn't. Like so many other German restuarants, Gerhard's tries to get away with reheating food and in 100% of the cases a reheated Wiener Schnitzel is nasty. The uncrisp hunk of rubbery meat that was placed before me was very disappointing. The whole point of a Weiner Schnitzel is that it is crispy and the only way to pull that off is to cook it as it is ordered. That Gerhards Bierstube can't take the time to make them freshly is an indictment as to their care and concern for the "quality" of their food. We aren't talking fast food here. We are talking about a sit down dining experience. I can wait an extra 15 or 20 minutes for the food to come out if it is freshly made. So will most everyone else. Even more disappointing? Sending the spaetzle back because it was cold. How could freshly prepared spaetzle be cold? I know - because it wasn't freshly made. The red cabbage was also under cooked, rubbery, and flavorless. I left half of it behind. On the upside, the bauernfrustuck was decent. I had my sites set for a slice of Apple Strudel but after that bad meal, I opted to skip the dessert. I had high hopes for Gerhards Bierstube. I was hoping to find a hidden gem in western Indiana. Instead, we found a nice locale with decent (if kitschy) ambience that served bad german food. I will not be going back.

Very good, and among the best of all of the german places I have visited. The atmosphere is nice and the service very good as well. No complaints about the food, and the menu has something for everyone.

Very good meal. Jaeger Schnitzel , red cabbage spaetzle and oh the gravy. Tall glass is Dunkel to boot. Good friendly service. What else can you ask for Recommend also the combination plate.

This place is amazing!!! & the closest I've had to German food since my trip a couple of years ago.

I LOVE eating here. I don't make it that way very often, but when i do it's Gerhardt's for sure! This is a quaint little German place with a cool ambience and the staff is excellent. Annalee is my favorite. Tuesday night is half price beer night and i will occasionally order a liter of something good Gerhardt has on tap. The portions are huge, the mustard is spicy, and I'm getting hungry thinking about it. That's got to be a good thing! Check it out! You won't be disappointed.

Ive been eating here for over thirty years with very few bad experiences. The food and the atmosphere completely compliment one another. The food is excellent, and the service is always great; and you always feel as if you had visited Germany.

I have been going to the Bierstube for about 50 years and have always loved their German food, especially the rouladen, sauerkraut, red cabbage and German fried potatoes. Things change for the worse a few years back, but now there are new owners and they are doing a great job. It is a lot of fun to have enough people in your party to dine family style and sample all the sides.

This was a spur of the moment idea. After a busy day we decided to treat ourselves. We started with 2 orders of kraut balls, yes they are that good. We each got the German feast, picking different items so we could share. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and fast and the price was very reasonable. I ate way more than I should and am feeling "fat and happy".

Authentic food, great service, great atmosphere and reasonably priced. Order true German food, and you will be impressed. Steak is just average, but you should expect that by how affordable a large steak is here. And this is not a steakhouse. But try something like the weinerschnitzel or various German side dishes, and you'll realize it's hard to find such a unique, quality meal so reasonably priced.

A great place for german food in Terre Haute. The different Bratwürst here is great along with the potato salad and Spätzle. I would suggest coming here. Guten Appetit!

No it is not closed. It is open and under new management. A great enthusiastic couple have taken over and the food and atmosphere are wonderful. I had a smoked pork chop which was excellent. The red cabbage was very good as well. They have a great selection of draft German beers as you would expect. My son, a vegetarian, was even able to get a veggie bratwurst. And their deserts were outstanding. We had the Black Forest cake and the apple strudel. The surprise of the evening was their Scotch Whiskey list!!! The owner has some of the best single malts made. But best of all, he sells them at cost. I was astounded to find Lavavulin 16 for $9.95 for a 2oz pour. If you are a single malt fan, this is the place to go to get an exposure to a wide range of Whiskeys at a more than fair price. This is a very fun place with a nice staff and customers. Let's face it, there aren't a lot of fun spots in the Haute. I would definitely go back again next time I'm in town. We had a blast. The only thing missing was a great German band.

The schnitzels are amazing! Can't go wrong as this is perfect German traditional faire. We did family style with a family of 6 who all really like to eat and there was more than plenty of food to fill our bellies. Everyone loved the spaetzle and red cabbage. We also ordered the kraut balls for an appetizer and were devoured instantly. And the service was top notch and fast. Frau Canton is the epitome of German hospitality and the perfect ambassador to tour you through your dinner.

well the last time we visit the food was not as good they must changed the cook or some. My gravy had a bad after taste. I guess I go to my Cafe in Campaign for now on for some Delicious germane food or cook my own.

I would nominate this restaurant for Come back restaurant of they year. Having worked in the restaurant business for a very long time, the owner of the Bierstube was going to close the restaurant. We could tell from the food that he was tired and was ready to retire. Fortunately for us, a new couple stepped up and bought the restaurant determined to bring it back to its former glory and then some. We had been to the Bierstube just before the ownership changed hands and the restaurant was back on the up swing, but, since Mike and his Wife bought the place, the quality of the food had increased dramatically. The Jagershnitzel is crisp again and the wonderful hunter sauce is rich and creamy with lots of mushrooms. The Ruoladen were large and perfectly seasoned and the Ruoladen gravy was excellent and rich. There was a definite difference in the Jagershnitzel sauce and the Ruoladen sauce. The flavors were different while both were savory and perfect for their entrees. I have also had their wurst plate that comes with three sausages and two sides. Of course you can get some fiery German mustard for the sausages. While the sausages were not made on site, they were still delicious. The Bratwurst and the Knackwurst. were both spiced well and tasted wonderful with the tart sauerkraut that they serve. Mike and his wife search out local German butchers to provide their sausages and there are obviously still some good ones out there. One new additions to the menu are the "to die for" Reuben rolls. This part egg roll part Reuben sandwich is crispy and meaty with enough sauerkraut cut through any residual oiliness from frying. They serve this with a side of thousand island dressing. This is a wonderful appetizer. A few weeks ago my wife and I were fortunate enough to go to the World Cup Final party held at the Bierstube and we had a wonderful time. I only mention this because this was the only time I was able to get desert after letting my meal digest a little while during the World Cup play. The black forest cake i had was everything a black forest cake should be. The cake was chocolaty and soaked in Kirsch making the desert very moist and tasty and there wasn't so much liquer to put the diner off. We had a great time at the party. The Bierstube is in the process of expanding the number of beers it has on tap. Soon it will be the place to go for German beer. On Tuesday the Bierstube offers half price beer which we make a point to enjoy. I haven't even touched on the sides that they serve with their meals. If you go in a party of 4 or more be sure to get your meal family style, allowing you to choose 6 of the scratch cooked sides they serve. If you haven't been to the Bierstube in a while you should give check them out. the restaurant is very good and will only get better.

Great authentic German food and wonderful selection of beers. Meal and bread could have been warmer and place needs a facelift but food, beer, service were excellent and management on duty and friendly.
